Word of the Week

This week’s word is a commonly used noun which means “a gradual change or development that produces a particular result”. Can you guess what it is?

The word is TREND. Let’s look at how it’s used in context.

1. You can say there is a trend towards something - “There’s been a growing trend towards home-working in recent years.”
2. You can say there is a trend in something - “The latest trend in teenage fashion is becoming a nationwide phenomenon.”
3. You can also talk about an upward trend or a downward trend - Today’s figures show a surprising upward trend in consumer spending.”

VERBS + TREND

1. You can follow a trend - “The majority of young people are still following the trend of leaving home before the age of 21.”
2. You can buck a trend (not be affected by it) - “This year’s increased profits show we are bucking the trend in the current economic downturn.”
3. You can reverse a trend (make the opposite thing happen) - “High tuition fees are likely to reverse the recent trends in universal university education.”
3. You can set a trend (start a new one) - “His innovative style of graffiti is setting new trends in the world of modern art.”

If you set a new trend you are known as a trendsetter.

ADJECTIVES + TREND

Here is a list of adjectives that are frequently used with ‘trend’ :-

NOW - current, general, present
NOT OBVIOUS - underlying
STARTED IN THE PAST, CONTINUING UP TO THE PRESENT - recent
GETTING BIGGER - growing, increasing, rising
WILL CONTINUE FOR A LONG/SHORT TIME IN THE FUTURE - long-term / short-term
