SECTION 1 (questions 1-5)

Before you do questions 1-5 read the following exam tips for this task type:

Notes completion

  • For this task type, you are required to write pieces of information in gaps in such a way that the result is a complete set of notes.
  • The instructions will tell you exactly how many words and/or numbers may be the maximum used. This doesn’t mean you need to write that many, but that you mustn’t write more than that.
  • The questions are in the same order as the information in the audio recording. If you miss one question, leave it. You must keep going – keep listening, and do the next questions. At the end, there will be time for you to re-consider the gap, and perhaps to remember what you could write there.
  • The words and numbers you write have to be exactly what you hear – don’t try to write different words with a similar meaning.
  • In the example task in these practice materials, you can see that the notes are quite short, and that articles – a, an, the – are not used. For example, the notes say ‘in rent’, not ‘in the rent’ or ‘in your rent’. This means that in this case you don’t need to worry about using articles yourself.
  • When you have practised listening to the recording, look at the audioscript and focus on the key words (underlined) for each answer to this task. Make sure you understand why the answer is correct.

Living in Easthill

Questions 1-5: Complete the notes below.

Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Cheapest accommodation is in 1___________ flat.

Answer: SHARED
Your answer should be the kind of flat that will be the ‘cheapest accommodation’. Although the man says ‘I only want a single flat’, Fiona says, ‘What she’d recommend, to keep costs down, is a shared flat.’ She also mentions ‘a one-bedroom place’, but the point is that ‘the rent’ for a shared flat ‘would be much lower’.

Questions 1-5: Complete the notes below.

Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Look on 2 ___________ for studio flats.

Answer: NEWHOME.COM
Your answer should be something that the man can ‘look on’ to help with finding a studio flat. Although Fiona talks about visiting local estate agents, this isn’t a current option as the man doesn’t live in Easthill currently. That’s why she suggests that he ‘go onto new home – as one word – dot com’. The preposition in ‘look on’ fits with this website address. She confirms this by explaining why the website is useful for the man: ‘that site has quite a few places, and there are pictures and plans and so on.’

Questions 1-5: Complete the notes below.

Check if 4 ___________ and ___________ are included in rent.

Answer: SHEETS/TOWELS
You have to identify what you need to ‘check’. You don’t have to ‘check’ – ‘get clear’ – ‘bills such as electricity’ because they ‘are always included’. You don’t have to check ‘phone’ either, because it ‘will always be an extra’. But Fiona says, ‘You’ll need to know if sheets are provided, or whether you’d have to allow extra.’ You can write ‘sheets and ‘towels’ in either order.

Questions 1-5: Complete the notes below.

Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Best to buy 5___________ bus pass.

Answer: NINETY-DAY
You need to write here what kind of bus pass is ‘best to buy’. There are several different kinds, and different ways in which some of them are special – ‘the shortest’, ‘the cheapest’ – but it is the 90-day pass which is recommended by Fiona for the man – ‘which would suit you the most’.

SECTION 1 (questions 6-10)

Before you do questions 6-10 read the following exam tips for this task type:

Table completion

  • For this task type, you need to complete a table by writing words and/or numbers in gaps.
  • Make sure what you write is exactly the same as what you hear – do not change words.
  • Remember that what you write must fit grammatically into the gap.
  • Check very carefully that the information you write is correct for that part of the table.
  • For each gap, there will probably be more than one answer which could seem correct, so don’t simply write in the first thing that appears at all correct.
  • You will hear information in the order of the questions, but paraphrases will probably be used for the words around the gaps.
  • When you have practised listening to the recording, look at the audioscript and focus on the key words (underlined) for each answer to this task. Make sure you understand why the answer is correct.

Questions 6-10. Complete the table below by typing on the line and pressing return. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Blooms Leisure Club Good Life Centre
For non-members Guided tour available 6___________for free

6___________for free

Answer: TWO/2 FITNESS CLASSES
You need to find something which is ‘for free’ at the Good Life Centre (not at Blooms). You should take out the key words from the relevant part of Fiona’s sentence: ‘They [the Good Life Centre] offer two fitness classes at no charge...’ ‘At no charge’ means ‘for free’. The fact that there are ‘two’ classes is part of the answer: to say just ‘classes’ is not enough information. ‘Fitness’ is important too, because there is a difference between these classes and the ‘specialist classes, such as tai chi’, which aren’t available for free.

7___________members get 10% discount

Answer: GOLD CARD
You need to write something here which can describe ‘members’ in some way – a kind of member? A number of members? You need to ensure what you write refers to Blooms Leisure Club. Fiona says that ‘you can elect to be a gold card member’ – which would fit in the gap. Then she says that if you were a gold card member, ‘you’d be entitled to a discount of ten percent in the café...’ – which confirms the information you need to know.

Machines arranged for doing 8___________

Answer: SPECIAL ROUTINES
You need to find something which you can ‘do’ with exercise machines in health or fitness clubs. The information must be about the Good Life Centre. Don’t be diverted by ‘sequenced’ into trying to write something like ‘sequences’. You should understand that the word ‘follow’ that you hear has the same meaning as ‘doing’ in the table, which means that you write ‘special routines’. The word ‘special’ is important, as these are routines that ‘get you really fit’.

Full-size swimming pool is now 9___________

Answer: HEATED
You need to find a word or words that can describe a swimming pool in the pattern ‘The swimming pool is X’. The description needs to be of the pool at Blooms. The possible words you hear are: ‘chilly’ (but that’s what it was, not is); ‘outdoor’ (which it still is, of course); ‘improved’ (but that’s the situation about swimming, not really the pool itself); ‘indoors’ (but that’s an adverb, not adjective, and in any case the pool is still an outdoor one); and ‘heated’ – ‘making it a heated one’ – which is the correct answer.

Answer: BY APPOINTMENT
You have to find something that can describe the trainers or contact with trainers. The information must be about the trainers at the Good Life Centre. ‘Consult’ matches with ‘see’ in what Fiona says. We learn that you cannot ‘see’ the trainers ‘any time’, but that ‘you must see them by appointment’, which means ‘by appointment’ is the answer.

Multiple choice with single answer

  • For this task type, you are required to choose the correct answer for each question from a three possible answers.
  • The questions will be presented in the same order as the relevant information in the recording.
  • If you miss one question, leave it, and move on to the next question, otherwise you will get completely lost. You can put an answer in later, when the recording has finished.
  • The language used in the question and options will often or usually be a paraphrase of the language in the recording, so don’t expect to hear exactly the same words or phrases as you read in the question.
  • The complexity of these multiple choice questions varies according to where they are in the exam, so they may test fairly straightforward facts, or they may test understanding of opinion and attitude, for example.
  • Read the question and options very carefully. Don’t lose marks because you missed the fact that the question asked about the main reason (rather than just a reason) or a certain speaker’s opinion (rather than the other speaker’s), and so on.

Questions 11-18

Choose the correct letter, A, B, or C by clicking the relevant button.

Q11: What did the speaker’s friend say about his volunteering and travel experience?

A = Correct:
‘He felt part of the community he visited’ matches the meaning of ‘he’s made friends for life and that he knows he’s contributed something of value to those people’ in the radio programme. He became close to people and his actions helped.

B is not the answer: although it seems he rejected the idea of ‘flying out on a bargain flight’, we don’t know how much his travel costs were.

C is not the answer: he didn’t receive training on the trip. He is an architect who has previously received architectural training.

C = Correct:
The idea that people ‘want to feel that they can contribute something’ matches the ‘idea of someone who consumes, who takes, is being replaced by the idea of someone who gives. So tourists are thinking ... more [increasingly] about what they do...’

A is not the answer: we only know that ‘tourists are thinking less about exactly where they go’, not where they do and don’t actually go.

B is not the answer: the people talked about are the travellers, not the local people.

Q13: What does the speaker recommend in a ‘voluntouring’ trip?

A = Correct:
The recommendation to combine different activities is expressed by ‘you should try to put two or more things ... together’ and this is reinforced by the rest of that sentence in the programme.

B is not the answer: the point made about language learning is that you’ll learn some while you’re there, not beforehand.

C is not the answer, although there is a reference to a place being ‘tropical or the arctic circle’.

C = Correct:
The question’s point that ‘you should think about your interests and what skills you can offer on the trip’ matches in the programme ‘the idea of giving as much as taking is important, so consider what skills you have, how you could benefit a volunteering project.’

A is not the answer, although there is a reference to ‘the period of time you spend there, long or short’.

B is not the answer, although ‘the other people’ are mentioned.

Q15: The speaker says an important benefit of ‘voluntourism’ for the traveller is ....

A = Correct:
The ‘important benefit of voluntourism for the traveller’ matches ‘this will be very helpful for you’ in the programme, and it is in relation to the way the local people will ‘show you their way of life, the way they do things in their culture’ – in other words, you’re ‘learning about local customs’.

B is not the answer: the local people will ‘look at you with interest’, not after you.

C is not the answer, although the word ‘transported’ is used in the programme.

Q16: The speaker recommends getting a business to sponsor your ‘voluntourism’ trip

B = Correct:
The idea that ‘local people will take you more seriously’ if you are sponsored by a business matches the idea in the programme that they ‘may well see you as more important in this way than if you just turn up on your own account’.

A is not the answer, because you use the money you save to stay longer, rather than giving it away.

C is not the answer, although there is a general reference to the fact that ‘businesses may be interested in the area you want to visit’.

SECTION 2 (questions 11-20)

Before you do questions 11-18 read the following exam tips for this task type:

Q17: Why does the speaker say trips that combine work and holidays are a good idea?

A = Correct:
The idea that travellers ‘go back to the places they visit’ matches ‘they are much more likely to return for further visits’ in the programme. The verb ‘combine’ relates to the noun ‘mixture’.

B is not the answer: there are references to places, but we don’t whether they would have gone there anyway or not.

C is not the answer: we only know that there may be ‘a better future environmentally’ because ‘more people think more about the implications of what they do’ – we don’t know if the damage is actually reduced.

Questions 11-18

Choose the correct letter, A, B, or C by clicking the relevant button.

Q18: What criticism was made in a recent newspaper article about ‘voluntourism’?

B = Correct:
The idea of voluntourism only being ‘fashionable at present’ matches ‘questioning whether the trend for voluntourism will last a long time, and is reinforced by it being ‘just a passing trend’.

A is not the answer: it is the trend that is short, not the trips themselves.

C is not the answer: there is a reference to how people ‘spend their money’, but no information about whether it reaches local communities or not.

SECTION 2 (questions 11-20)

Before you do questions 19-20, read the following tips for this task type:

Multiple choice with multiple answers

  • For this task type, you are required to answer each question by choosing two correct options from a list.
  • The length or difficulty of the recording for this task will probably be less than when one mark is available for each answer – check Multiple choice with multiple answers with one mark each (see Section 3 questions 21-24).
  • The order of the list of options may be different from the order of information in the recording for this task type, so make sure you read the list very carefully before the listening starts.
  • There will probably be some kind of reference to all the things in the list, so make sure that you choose the ones that fit with the question that is asked about them.
  • You may hear exactly the words in the list, or the recording may contain paraphrases of them.

Questions 19 and 20

For each question 19 and 20, choose TWO letters, A-F by clicking the relevant button.

Q19: Which TWO things should you check when researching possible ‘voluntourism’ trips?

Answer: C & E "how long the scheme has been running" and "who your family can contact"

Researching ‘how long the scheme has been running’ matches ‘the organisers’ history, see if they’ve been organising the trips for some time’. Knowing ‘who your family can contact’ matches ‘remember that your family will want you to be able to tell them exactly who they can get in touch with while you are away...’ The other answers are not correct, although certain words from them or parts of ideas are included in the programme.

Questions 19 and 20

For each question 19 and 20, choose TWO letters, A-F by clicking the relevant button.

Q20: Which TWO things should you always take on any ‘voluntourism’ trip?

Answer: A & C "journal" and "medical supplies"

Taking a ‘journal’ is confirmed as a good idea: ‘it’s much better to take a journal and record your impressions in that...’ Taking ‘medical supplies’ with you is confirmed: ‘you don’t find a handy pharmacist on street corners in the desert, so take your own medicines.’ The other answers are not correct: the objects are mentioned, but they are not recommended to take on all trips.
