Look at this IELTS Task 2 essay question:

Popular sporting events such as the Olympics and the football World Cup help to ease international tensions and allow people to show feelings of patriotism in a safe way.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Now look at a sample introduction for this essay:

With so many conflicts taking place between different countries around the world it is certainly a relief to see nations competing positively during international sports championships such as the Olympics. In this way, I believe it does give people an opportunity to support their national athletes and display patriotic emotions in a harmonious environment. However, to say that such events help to alleviate cross-border tensions is perhaps a rather naive view.

Now look at this topic sentence for the 1st paragraph (in agreement with the first part of the statement)

Despite today’s worldwide migration, people still like to have a reason to feel proud of their home country.

Can you expand this idea into a full paragraph in no more than 50-80 words. Use the advice given in yesterday’s blogpost to help you.

We have a winner!!

Congratulations to Guru Deepak who wrote this paragraph:

Firstly, when participants compete with many countries in the games, they are really provided with the chance to exhibit their extraordinary talents to the world in order to secure their own nations fame. This plays a main role in promoting patriotism to everyone. For instance, it’s not uncommon that spectators are so enthusiastic to support their teams to win a medal or a match, which often happens in cricket too. Additionally, it is not an exaggeration to say that the audience is sometimes more keen to defeat the opponents than the players.
