Household Tasks - band 7

The diagram illustrates the number of minutes spent per person each day on household tasks in Great Britain.

Overall, it is evident that the household chores are primarily dominated by women, which is twice as much minutes everyday as men do, in 4 out of 6 household tasks.

Females significantly spent most of their time cooking, baking and washing up at 74 minutes per day while maintenance odd jobs come last at 9.5 minutes a day. Cleaning, house tidying and care of own children and play take 45 minutes to almost 1 hour each day for women. The other two remaining housework including clothes, washing, ironing, sewing and gardening and pet care are less than thrice the minutes spent daily, in comparison to cooking, baking and washing up. Moreover, these two household tasks have the highest and lowest time performance for males.

Gardening and pet care ranked first as male household task at approximately 50 minutes each day. On the other hand, clothes, washing, ironing and sewing accounted for no more 10% of the former task. It can be seen that about 20-30 minutes per day are allotted for cooking, baking and washing up, maintenance odd jobs and child care and play for males, which are nearly half the time of their female counterparts. Similarly, cleaning and house tidying are one of the least responsibilities for men.
