I expect you know that ‘to recommend’ means to advise someone that they should do something or to say that someone or something is good and worth visiting / experiencing / doing / having etc’. For example;
“I recommend that you buy a bigger car.” OR “I recommend that new Italian restaurant in town.”
But do you know how to use ‘recommend’ in a sentence? There are 5 main structures you can use:
1. to recommend (that) someone do something
Eg, I recommend (that) you see a doctor.
2. to recommend doing something
Eg, I recommend reading the book first before you see the film.
3. to recommend somebody to do something
Eg, We recommend our students to live on campus.
4. to recommend somebody for something
Eg, I strongly recommend Oliver for the position of Assistant Manager.
5. to recommend somebody or something to somebody
Eg, Please recommend our company to your customers.
In example 4 the adverb ‘strongly’ was used with recommend. Other adverbs that are commonly used with ‘recommend’ are:
earnestly, heartily, highly, thoroughly, unreservedly, wholeheartedly
For example;
I earnestly recommend that you try to use these structures the next time you speak or write in English!!
